I have tinted many windows in the past and I would agree that it is most definately a difficult process. It is also a two man job even though I have seen many a pro do it themselves...
If you want to tackle it yourself there are some tricks that can help. First lay the tint up on the outside of the window and give it a rough trim. Than put it on and work the bubbles out from the center. You should spray the window and the tint down with a soapy water solution. There is also a product called "tint on" that I have had great success with, but regular soap works almost as well. Get some good soft rubber squegees and work out the big bubbles. Let it sit a minute or two and push it out again. Look from the outside for errors. then push out accordingly. Wait a good while and trim.
All that said I definately was not impressed with my first few tint jobs. But the more I did the better they came out. And back in NY where I used to do them it was $200-300 to tint a sedan. Since the tint was relitively cheap I figured I could do it myself for less than that even if I messed up a roll...
If you are very patient, fairly good with your hands, and willing to learn a little while you work do it yourself. If you want a hassle free good looking job pay someone to do it. It probably will not come out that good the first few cars you do. Maybe you should try learning on some friends vehicles...
