Dean,
We are talking about a 1999 9^3 SE covertible with 19K miles. It's not bushings or wear items. It has Michelin Pilots, Z rated (205/50-16). I don't know what the differences are between the base and SE are or if there are differences for the conv. I do know that the convertible has reinforcements that run from the strut tower to the firewall. I've not heard these mentioned on other 9^3 discussions.
Anyway, I didn't buy it as a sports car, I wanted a safe convertible. What I can't get over is how much better the 9000 series (including the Aero) and the 9^5 series (again including the aero) are for ride comfort. Don't get me wrong I like handing, but stiffening (sp?) things to the point where the tires don't follow the road is NOT a good thing. That's the thing that surprises me....there's this one S curve I travel frequently. Any of the loaners I have had (all 9^5's) negotiate it with ease, as did my Corrado, BMW, and MB. The road is a series of patches, and at the apex of the 2nd curve is bumpy. The convertible wants to bounce, hop, and be generally uncivilized.
It also seems to make very little difference whether I run the low end of tire inflation or the high end (41/42 PSI F/R). Having learned on previous cars I tend to the high end for rim protection. That leftover 2K Aero Wagon is starting to look attractive....(no kids just a Bullmastiff, all 132 lbs.....he so likes the top down....)
I am quite puzzled.
Any additional thoughts?
