The manual states the MINIMUM recommended servicing. You should check your fluids routinely for change in levels, color, abnormalities etc. If the oil changes color then it's time to change it. If the air filter looks dirty, clean it or change it. You see where I'm going? Some people don't open there hood for a long time and then wonder why they're radiator over heated due to low coolant. Simple checks can keep everything running smooth and give you peace of mind.

I changed my oil at 1,000 (included in '99's), then at 4,500, 9,500 and 14,500 all substituting with Mobil1. At the 4,500 change the oil had clearly changed color, but the 9,500 and 14,500 intervals showed no sign of oil break down or engine "dirt". Coolant level was fine until 14,500 where it was down about a 1/2 inch on the reserve tank.

Basically, if you're a sporty/hard driver you may need to change things sooner. If you live in a dusty/sandy area you're air filter and oil flter will need attention. Same if you live in a very hot areas (the South/Southwest in the summer).

Saab has adopted GM's practice of extended "maintanence free" servicing. But that theory is for minimum and ideal driving conditions. In the real world cars may require more than the minimum.

Just keep your eye on things and it should be fine. And I wouldn't stress about the 1600 mile service. My Saabtech said the up to 2500 is fine. Plus, the 2000 up models come with synthetic, whereas '98-'99 had dyno oil.

I've had no problems with our two '99 9-3's at 18,000 and 16,000 miles.

Sorry for the auto 101 post, but you seem naive to the maintanace game...

Good luck and enjoy!
