I'd be interested to see what the VW numbers were too. Here in New England, there seem to be a lot more 5-speed Golfs and Jettas that automatic ones here.
I would have thought the BMW 3 series would be higher for manuals, but it's important to remember that the 9-5 V6 is auto only (which makes me wonder what percent of 9-5s are 2.3T versus 3 liters), and I think most A6s (except the 2.7T) are automatic only too, right?
I think I read that something like 83% of US drivers drive an automatic, and in Europe (averaging about 85% manual), Italy was the highest for manuals, at around 90%. I know that in the UK, the percentage of automatics is increasing, up to about 18 or 20% of all cars there now (probably due to people sick of sitting in traffic on the motorways).
I'm glad I went back to the manual world...I traded in a Volvo 850 Turbo (auto only back in '95) on the Viggen, and then bought a mint Peugeot 405 Mi16 as a "play-thing" (both 5-speed only cars). Don't miss the automatic at all...
