I would only differ from your characterization by noting that BMWs and Audis have been around a lot longer than the 80s.....but yes, even in the early 70s when I first noted and drove the 2002, they were a premium
priced car compared to the usual American dreck of the time (Ramblers,
Pintos, Gremlins etc).--there WAS no American or Japanese sport sedan
worthy of the name (except maybe those fun Datsun 510s). However, they
were hardly the "status symbol" that the words now describe--more like a
true cult car, based on the typical Midwestern response to seeing one
("Whatinhell is THAT thing")....Even now, if I could get any BMW I wanted,
it would be a 2002 Tii or an early 3.0 Coupe, not the Poster Car of the DotCom kids they now seem to be so often....;-)
