Test driving a 9-3

I've put the Saab 9-3 on my "short list" of cars to buy. However, the thread concerning the "freakish, dangerous" handling characteristics of the 9-3 has me concerned. I've driven a base 9-3, but this was on perfect roads (flat, no potholes) in Arizona. I didn't notice any poor handling characteristics. I would like to test drive both the 9-3 SE and the Viggen, but I'd like to test drive them on roads where the torque/camber steer is more likely to develop. Do I need to find a pothole-strewn road, a road with stutter bumps, or can I feel the torque steer on flat roads? Also, I may not be able to find a manual SE and probably won't be able to find a Viggen at all. Does the automatic SE suffer from the same torque steer?
Thanks for any responses.
