I had a 96 900, and now have two 9-5's; a sedan and wagon. Since the 900 is similar in a lot of ways to the 9-3, here are my comments. The interior room in the 9-5 is significantly more. Two adults are comfortable in the front of either vehicle, but I felt bad putting adults in the back of the 900 for long trips. It is very cramped compared to the 9-5. The hatchback on the 900 could carry just about anything (32" TV in the box, etc), but the luggage area in the 9-5 isn't small either. The 900 was a lot quicker than the 9-5, (185 hp vs 170 hp, also lighter car), but top speed on both is around 140 mph. Now that they have upped the 900 engine, it should be even quicker. It's certainly more of a "sports" car than the 9-5. I don't have an Aero so I am comparing the base 9-5 engines to the 900SE engine built in 96. The 15 hp increase in the new 9-5's base isn't apparent in normal driving.
If you drive alone or with one other person a lot and want a fun car, go with the 9-3!
If you carry passengers or have a large family, I would stay with the 9-5.
If you have any specific questions, let me know.
