If you are not inside the car, simply open the hatch using your remote, or use the keyhole in the right tail light.
If you are loading or unloading a number of items and want to close the hatch in between loads, you don't have to close it all the way. Simply close it slowly and lightly until the first (slight) "click." When you return to the car (even hours later,) you can re-open it by just lifting it from the handle above the license plate.
