I don't get it... Where are your keys during this hatch-opening operation? You don't have to get in the car if you just hit the hatch unlock button
on the key fob. Then again, I have a '99 with "Moby Dick" remote - do the '01 all-in-one key/remotes delete the hatch unlock function? It reminds of the only thing I like about the '99 remote - its tactile size and logical arrangement mean you don't have to witness its ugliness in order to operate it. Couldn't they, like, integrate a flashlight or other gadget into it, thereby justifying the size?
As far as the hatch release logic, itself I think all cars should run theirs the way Saabs do. To my mind, the interior release is convenient only for those few occassions where you want to open the hatch while the engine is running. I like having the hatch release capability on the driver's door and alarm remote, plus the safety of the manual latch/auto-relock function. There's nothing more annoying than accidentally releasing your hatch (or changing your mind in the middle of it) and then having to get out of your car just to re-close the hatch.
