Buying wheels...is bending a big problem? Suggestions?

I have a '98 9-3 base with the 3-spoke, 15" factory alloys right now. When I bought my Arctic Alpines, I had them mounted on the 15s, planning on getting a new (larger) summer set when the time came. I have been shopping around a bit, mostly looking at 16" wheels right now, as I don't want to have to rush the decision when I need to make the switch.
I'd go with 17s for the better handling, but I'm worried that I'd bend rims all the time. Considering all the potholes and occasional gravel roads I have to drive on, I just don't think they'd hold up. I have heard a lot about bent rims on this board, especially on Viggens and SEs. Is the problem a Saab factory wheel problem, or is this going to hold true for aftermarkets as well? I'm leaning towards Saab 3-spoke Viking wheels, but I can't find a set for a reasonable price. Any impressions on the durability of the Vikings or recommendations/pictures of other aftermarket wheels?
