I, too, got a bit of a shock recently when I looked at what my '99 Viggen "might" be worth to a local used car shop (specializing in higher end euro's) I love the Viggen but am looking for something with 4-doors as I take a lot of clients to lunch, etc. and am tiring of the back seat shuffle.
Anyway, I was drooling over a nice 4-door '98 M3 priced at 33K thinking, Geez, my viggen must be worth somewhere in the high 20's and maybe for a few thou I could make the swap...wrong!
Turns out the NADA book does not even show a premium for the Viggen vs. a normal 9-3! Full blue book for my '99 with 25k miles was about $19k , and dealer said he'd give me 15k towards the M3 leaving me with a payment of 18k plus my Viggen for a car 1 year older with 8k more miles. I chuckled and said no thanks.
Long story short, I'll keep the Viggen, run a ton of miles on it (like I did with my 855 volvo) and after 150-200k, depreciation is a moot point anyway.
It is eye opening, nevertheless, and for one that intends to churn cars every couple of years, the 9-3 is obviously a horrible choice.
The deep discounts Saab is throwing out there sure are not helping this either, though I was very appreciative when I purchased my '99 in Jan of '00 for 8k off sticker!
