I replaced my stock shocks with Koni dampers. It made all the difference in the world. I did it without replacing the springs (first) and eventually replaced the springs to stiffen up the softened ride.
The SAAB rear shocks on my 1999 9-3SE sort of "jacked" the rear end up and made the bumps harsh. The regular 9-3 was fine. It's terribly smooth now with the different dampers.
Actually the ride is too soft for my tastes now. The aftermarket Eibach springs are about the same stiffness as the stock ones and the rears are progressive which makes the ride feel even softer. I don't recommend them for the city as they're too soft to safely lower your car for the city.
Point; I blame the stock SAAB dampers for the harsh ride. They're gone and the ride is supple.
