I was checking out auto loan rates on PeopleFirst.com (linked from Edmunds) and it looks like they'll give you 8.49% APR for 72 months with no down payment and no additional fees. (BTW, sounds like a really easy process to apply; all internet-based, response w/in 15 min, and they just send you a blank check.) Anyway, finance $20,000 (making a $1000 downpayment on a 9-3 at Edmund's TMV) and your payments work out to just under $360. Over the next 3 years, you will have paid a total of $13800, including your $1000 down payment. At that point (assuming that the car will be worth about what a '97 900 SE is now), you'd have a car
worth $12800 dealer trade-in according to Edmunds. Residual on the loan would total about $11800. Right then, you could walk away with $1000; probably more if you sold the car yourself.

With the Saab 36 month lease, you're going to shell out at least $14300 according to Saab's lease deal information on their website. With the lease you've still spent more and got nothing out of it (except paying $15/month less). Say you had the loan and sold the car for $12800, your total out of pocket would have been $12800, a savings of $1500 over the lease. Of course, by leasing you're not taking any risk as far as depreciation goes. If somehow Saab's resale value went a few thousand lower in the next couple of years, then you wouldn't be responsible for the increased depreciation. Considering the upcoming release of the NG9-3, I wouldn't be too surprised if 9-3 resale values dropped a bit more.

Personally, I couldn't justify spending $5000 every year just to have the privelage of driving a new Saab. I'm sticking with this one for the long haul. (I also bought used, so I have the best of both worlds.)
