I have a 99 Viggen with about 28k miles on it which I bought to replace a Volvo '94 855M that I still own and use as the "farm vehicle" now that it has 210,000 miles. The Volvo served me extremely well and is actually still in excellent condition, though I travel a lot for work and frequently take clients along, so I wanted something fresher.

Pros and cons of each, in my opinion:
Saab- great ergonomics, the hatch is a nice compromise of car and wagon, but definitely not as verstile as the wagon.
The Saab gearing is brilliant. I almost always get 30 mpg on the highway even at 80 mph. Mixed driving usually yields in the 27-28 mpg range.
The Viggen seats are great.
The engine power is great.
Negatives- lousy re-sale value, old rear suspension (but still hauls butt in the twisties, just not with that BMW smoothness)
Acceleration from dead stop is a bit sketchy due to wheel spin and camber steer, but where it counts, say 50-80, the car is tough to beat.
Long term reliablity yet to be proven, so far not a single real "issue" other than a couple re-calls

As for the Volvo-
incredible re-sale value up this way.
Bullet proof drive train- I still have the original clutch, exhaust, alternator, etc, etc. In fact, the only things I have changed are routine wear items and shocks (at 192k mi.)
Judging from postings on the Brickboard, later model Volvo quality seems to be on a decline. Lots of gripes about all sorts of stuff (may be from whiners?)
The T60 draws its mechanicals from the 850 V/S70 heritage which, to me, is pretty flawless. Car and driver says of it about what it always says about high powered FWD cars. I say bullocks, learn how to appreciate FWD and it will keep you out of all sorts of trouble up here in the snowy north.
I would compare the S60 to the Viggen, not the SE, to be fair price-wise. The Viggen is about to be obsolete whereas the S60 is fresh. Volvo sedans have not always commanded great re-sale values (unlike the wagons)but that is not Saabs strong suit either!

Have fun deciding!

ps-A one year old Audi A6 2.7T putting it in the S60 price range would be darned attractive to me as well. But then a used Viggen just might be the proverbial deal and a half, juding by the whopping they take.
