I chose the 9-3SE over the Volvo because the Volvo is so disconneted from the road. Many Americans actually like being disconnected from the road. I can't figure that out. Most of my friends like something that's fast in a straight line, and slightly floaty.
When I drove a different Volvo, the Volvo S70, it felt like a K-Car a friend of mine had years ago. Very quiet, OK power, solid, and square. As soon as I made that connection, I turned right around.
If I got the S60 I would immediately throw different swaybars and bushings in it. It would have to be the T5 as well. I would also consider different springs unless you live in the city. I could live with an S60 if the suspension is modified.
I love the feel of the 9-3. It's like a cockpit. I also loved being able to throw my snowblower in the back, drive over to my friends house, pull out this large Ariens snowblower and clear his driveway. Oh yeah, he has an S70 and had called the 9-3 small at one point. He was a little quiet as his jaw was on the ground when he saw me pull out the snowblower. :)
ps. 40K miles and no problems. Only complaint is the torque/camber steer under heavy acceleration.
pss. The 9-5 Aero is probably closer to what you're looking for. That's probably the best Saab ever.
