Picasa is just a handy and free photo viewing and organization tool, with easy uploads if you want to your Google Picasa site. I have friends that absolutely hate it for a bunch of reasons, but it works for me.

It will copy images onto your hard drive that you "import" from a camera or flash disk. If she was importing images that were already on her computer then it likely copied them from wherever they were to where it wanted to put them.
