*URGENT* Engine rebuild dilemna - please any advice Posted by Nicholas [Email] (#2995) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Nicholas) on Fri, 6 Feb 2009 14:58:25 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
For those of you who read the forum, this is about my 2000 9-3 that engine "blew" presumably due to oil starvation at about 80K miles.
Well long story short, I had it taken to an engine shop that I thought seemed to be a pretty good Indy. They quoted me a "flat rate" of about $3,000 to "rebuild" the engine. Of course, the turbo and a couple of major engine parts (rods, etc.) were not included if damaged. They spent about 60 seconds telling me that. Naturally, given that I've been otherwise maintaining the vehicle and it was driving well up until the engine blow - I put a down payment and told them to go ahead.
Well they took a week longer than they said to rip it apart and then called me back insisting I come in and "take a look". It's been a bad week, so I insisted they tell me more over the phone. Believe it or not, these guys are not quoting an additional 5,000 in additional parts and rec'd repair for this engine. I'm just shocked, and 8,000 is obviously too much to put into this car.
I'm going in tomorrow to take a look , because I really have no other choice at this point. They are going to charge me for ripping it apart. What I got out of the guy on the phone was that the most "essential" big item was that the "block" wound up being damaged beyond repair? The engine was running (badly) before they took it apart. That was a reason they gave me that it was unlikely to have any "damage beyond the rebuild price". :(
As far as the rest of the crazy numbers , these guys are listing off just about every part under the hood. Again, they aren't saying these items are broken but just that they "should be replaced if they haven't". Other shocker to me is that stuff like the water pump they are now telling me "could get more wear and tear" post engine rebuild. They've got just about every hose listed, sensors, the oil cooler? (i thought would be included). On the oil cooler they are saying they may be able to flush it out (from bearing debris) but that would also cost big money extra.
There is more, but I don't want to make this post too long. Just looking for some tips from you guys given these circumstances. What I should do from here on out. What I should look for tomorrow. I mean, all these parts I just know I wouldn't have been replacing at this mileage and age. I've had several cars go well beyond this and never replaced these parts. Maybe I can just do the "block" bare minimum and all will be fine and these guys just try to get as much as they can from you. At the same time, I now know their mickey mouse warranty won't cover any of this stuff. Typical... The main thing I am very angry about is how their "sales guy" totally didn't even indicated that these engine rebuilds could easily and WAY exceed their "flat rate" costs. I run a computer business and if I quoted people on a "flat rate" and then unexpectedly came through with huge prices I don't think I'd still have my head. lol
Thanks for any help, and I appreciate all the help you guys have given me so far in the life of this SAAB. However, if it's gonna be 8 grand to get out of this mess that SAAB's is going to have to go to the junkyard.
