Stereo - to upgrade?
Posted by Alex (more from Alex) on Sat, 14 Feb 2009 14:08:08

My stereo in my 01 9-3 SE vert started acting funny a few weeks ago: buttons 1,2,4,5, eject, and WB won't work. So today I pulled it out and dissected it. Turns out the board behind the buttons (circuit board with pressure sensors) is cracked and broken in a few spots.
So I got to looking into my options: Wasyl at saabradio.com said $180 to repair it. I could find a used CD player on evilbay or something and use it (if its been divorced) or just use the touch panel from it for probably about $50. Or I could bite the bullet and buy a clarion/blaupunkt/alpine with the adapters and harnesses to make it work with my steering wheel controls and all 6 speakers and be able to play MP3s. I'm thinking the last option would end up around $200-$250 depending on brand/model.
I've researched and found that I can add an AUX through the phone hack if I want that option.
I have had a hard time finding any up to date resource though on upgrading the stereo. I know I'll need an antenna adapter, the single din facia kit, and a wiring harness. I am wondering though if the crutchfield kit contains the round din plug adapter for the door speakers (and rears?) I don't want to cut any wires b/c I like keeping my mods reversible and b/c that lead is already short enough for my taste.
Does anyone have opinions on this? or some leads on the best install kit or combination of kits? or a source on a cheap radio I can take the facia circuit board from?
