Normally, the deadbolt is activated by turning (driver side lock) the key past the normal locking point. It should stay in position as opposed to recoilling back like when you lock the door normally. Don't know of any other way to deactivate it.

Maybe try to work some lock grease into the tumblers to work them loose. Also, I once had a key that was so worn it would not work in the doors but would work in the ignition. That was a Honda not a Saab though.
