Exhaust Manifold Gasket, Studs / Turbo / Cyl 4 Rich
Posted by bikermike (more from bikermike) on Fri, 8 Jun 2012 17:50:59

I used to post at Saabnet back the mid 90's when I bought my '94 900SET. I am returning now for some guidance. Thanks in advance for the help.

A few things have happened to the car recently and I suspect they are related. The car has 191k miles now.

1. Whining sound when boost gauge goes into yellow / middle range. I suspect it is the from the turbo.

2. Exhaust manifold studs have snapped around cylinder #4. Initially there was blow-by. Now the gasket has become dislodged there is exhaust free flow from the gap. It's really loud and there is a lack of power which I associate with exhaust bypassing the turbo.

3. Rough idle, rich exhaust smell, rough running and stumbling. I pulled the plugs and confirmed cylinder #4 is rich (sooty plug).

The car needs a fair bit of other work done to it soon: brakes, tires, CV boot, AC compressor. It's at the point of needing more to keep it running than it is worth.

If I dive into dealing with the exhaust manifold it would be good time to find a turbo from a donor car and keep it on the road a bit longer. But if that doesn't address the poor running / rich mix issues on cyl #4 I don't want to start down the slippery slope of throwing more money at the car.

Is it time to move on? I'm in the San Jose, CA area if someone is looking for a project.
