02 Viggen Brake booster leak

02 Viggen 70K. Power brake assist seems to be working OK. The rubber boot between the firewall and booster is ripped at the booster. There is a lot of air leaking and appears to be coming from the booster. When I depress the brake pedal, the air leak stops and the rpm's drop to 500 and the car almost stalls. The booster vacuum lines look good. So I believe my booster needs to be replaced. I will check vacuum pressure today. Is there anything else I should check/ test before replacing a $700 part?
