Is running out of gas bad on the fuel pump?

I would like to do this prior to changing my fuel filter, in hopes of sucking up some sediment. But if its not good for the pump, then i wont do it. In addition to possibly hurting the internals by running it dry, ive heard that the fuel around the pump cools it. Any of this true?
