I replaced my 2002 Viggen's front end when I upgraded my shocks to Bilstein HDs at about 70,000 miles and am I ever glad I did. The car felt like a new one...much tighter and more controllable.
I replaced the control arms, stanchions, tie rod and sway rod ends as well as the strut mounts and bearings. I stayed away from poly because of winter harsgphness and reduced life expectancy. The big surprise were the stanchion to subframe bolts which were almost completely rusted through (I'm in the rust belt and if anyone is, they should replace these every few years...if they ever broke, extracting them would be pure Hell! Also worthy of note, very little exposure is given to the stanchion shims, two per the bolts mentioned above. Without them, you'll get clunking and many thanks to a member here who pointed that out to me.
I considered this work preventative as well as a performance upgrade. The Bilsteins r
early transform the car into a very much better handling machine. Pretty easy DIY.
