I did remember to check the tach needle at least one time during a cranking spell (this has happened several times, now), and it did not move at all. This in one reason I'm leaning toward blaming the CPS instead of the pump. My theory is that the CPS is "shocked" into action when the engine fires due to the starting fluid, but I don't know if that's valid.
The fact remains that the car instantly starts and runs apparently normally each and every time after I squirt in the starting fluid.
