My take is the 5th gear sycronizer is very worn but when you lessen the amount of work it has to do by shifting slowly it is able to function. I suspect a garage would want a lot of money to remove the transmission to install new parts. It might even be cheaper to install a used transmission, if you could be sure of the condition. I agree shifting slowly into fifth is a reasonable and economical option. Changing your transmission oil and cleaning off the magnet on the drain plug would be good to do if you have not done that lately.
