A medium size depresses the center pin just enough to release, but then the width of the tip prevents the pin from being depressed too far. If you have enough space around the rivet, the handle in the trunk tool kit has a protrusion on the end that is designed for just this purpose. This short circular bump is not the result of sloppy injection molding, but it there deliberately to release the center pins on these plastic rivets.
