2000 Viggen, very good condition, 240K miles..... has not been driven in dark for perhaps a month. Started out tonight and noticed High Beam indicator was not coming on, then observed low bean light pattern suggested driver's side headlamp inoperable. Saw the "Front Light Failure warning on car's warning panel. Turned headlight selector switch off then back on.... with light selector on the normal position for headlights on, seemed to have SAAB's normal Daylight Running Lights (not as bright as full headlights) but now High Beams worked and got High Beam Indicator lit on instrument panel. Had about 20 minute drive (slow - and on lightly traveled roads). Pulled up in front of garage to look over light pattern. Turned car off / waited / restated; at this time I noticed the headlight switch, which incidentally is slightly loose, was warm to the touch. In testing I found the headlights seem the same in the normal "lights off" (Daytime Running Lights operating) position and when I turned the switch to the normal "Headlights On" position. (I hold the outer bezel with the fingers of one hand and turn the switch using the other hand to overcome that slight looseness in the switch; otherwise the whole switch will try to rotate in the direction the light selector switch is moved.) The lights will switch up to (and the indicator light on the dash lights to indicate) the high beams are in use; when the high beams are not in use the lights appear to be the same brightness at all times. Note: although the driver's side headlight appeared to be out when I first noticed this problem, that has not happened since, the headlight appears to be working but again -- only at the Daytime Running Light level of output.
