The A123 AMG battery is simply the LiFePO4 chemistry I already mentioned, and easily available online for any application provided you are willing to pay the premium. It makes zero sense for a starting battery as the ROI would be never. You'd be further ahead by driving around with half a tank of gas and no spare tire, or going on a diet.

So I have no idea what you are really trying to discuss here. The proper direction is going to be for automotive manufacturers to start designing cars around the desired chemistry, not the other way around. A123 and AMG can gloat all they want about saving a few kg on their battery, but again, compared to the amount of weight kicking around throughout the rest of the car, it just makes them look silly. I typically drive my Viggen around with only half a tank of gas which saves 50lbs right away. I used a spare tire in my truck 25 years ago, once. NEVER, EVER have needed one any other time.

If you truly want to make some waves, research retrofitting hybrid powertrains/regenerative braking, adding start/stop and cylinder deactivation into current vehicles. The big manufacturers are NOT interested in this since it would kill new car sales. People have tried to add something to the rear wheels of FWD cars but things haven't really taken off. CARB, DMCA and other similar laws are part of the problem.
