Frustration with an exhaust job today Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Mon, 22 May 2017 15:16:06 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I ordered all the parts to replace the flex pipe and the heater core O-rings for my Viggen back in February. Spring has been so cold and wet that today was the first day I had an opportunity to attack the jobs.
Heater Core O-rings - Nix to that one for a few more weeks. My wife apparently ordered a vacuum coolant extractor that will make the job far easier. I will receive this new tool as a gift in mid-June for either Father's Day or my Birthday. (when will she learn to use her work email rather than our home email when ordering gifts for me?)
Flex Pipe - I took a day of Vacation to have the fertilizer bomb removed from the steering column of my wife's 9-3SC this morning. Returned home from that quick trip, cleared out the garage, opened the box of parts that has been on hand for three months, and discovered I had only one exhaust clamp. The job requires two! I checked my electronic eEuro order record and son-of-a-gun, I only ordered one! The I remembered. When ordering these parts three months ago the web site would allow me to insert the desired quantity on the part page, but would reset the quantity to one when I clicked the "Add To Cart" button. I caught this fluke with the Heater Core O-ring Clamps and increased the quantity to two in the cart screen, but missed it with the exhaust clamp. Now what?
I considered tackling the job anyway in hope that one of the existing clamps would be re-usable but thought better of it. They are 17+ years old and will likely need to be cut off. The shipping for one clamp will exceed the cost of the clamp itself. No one locally stocks these special clamps for a 17 year old, low volume, European sports car, from a defunct manufacturer. Imagine that?
The Dealership did a 27 point inspection on the wife's car today that they didn't do on my 9-5 two weeks ago for the same warranty item. On the inspection report was the notation that her front brake pads were in the Yellow Zone of life expectancy.
Problem solved! I ordered front and rear pads for her car (Saab for the front and Akebono Euro for the rear), and the exhaust clamp. Voila, Free Shipping! Ok, so I paid an extra $5 to have the all parts here by Friday. Still better than paying more than the price of the ~$9 clamp to only have it shipped.
Then off to work to salvage at least some of my vacation hours for future use.
