Crankshaft end play Posted by Justin VanAbrahams [Email] (#32) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Justin VanAbrahams) on Mon, 26 Feb 2018 14:02:38 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I have been fighting a *weird* problem on an '01 9-3. It originally had an automatic that worked perfectly except could not engage 4th gear. I installed a good used transmission and after several hundred miles ended up with a massive ATF leak from the input shaft. I pulled it, resealed it, and 1,000 miles later had the same problem. Got ANOTHER good used transmission, installed it and had the same leak with 20 miles. Pulled it, replaced the flex plate (kinda for no good reason), same problem AGAIN.
Obviously it's not the transmission. :)
While staring at a B205 on an engine stand, I noticed the placement of the rear crank flange and I'm thinking the engine in the car may not be similar. I don't know, but I'm grasping at straws and working from memory. I am wondering if perhaps the crank has walked (or been moved?) "forwards," away from the transmission, resulting in the torque converter not sealing properly against the pump.
On a car with a manual transmission, you can pry between crank pulley/engine/flywheel to measure end play... but how would one do that on an automatic? Prying between engine and flex plate seems like a really bad idea. Where else can one get leverage?
