Yeah, not surprised that the Saab tool isn't available. Initially that was discouraging, but after further looking it seems that there are enough reasonable substitutes. The pullers aren't cheap, but maybe a worthwhile experiment. The lynch pin will be whether I can find a replacement oil pump seal... that bit seems like a rarity as well. ;)
I put 175 miles on the transmission today. Drove up into the Sierras and back, then a big loop around town. Goal was to keep up highway speeds and keep pressure in the transmission. At 25, 50, 75, and 100 miles the bottom of the box was bone dry. At 125 miles there was a singular drop of dirty fluid from the inspection plate which put the fear in me, because I've seen that before. I know there was some spillage from the torque converter into the bell housing during install, It's possible it got thin enough to make its way to the bottom, but still... fear. I put it away for a couple hours, then another 50 miles. At 150, bone dry. At 175, bone dry.
In a vacuum, this is great news. Transmission #2 here previously did 16 miles before leaking, then another 8 after a reseal. 175 miles is a huge improvement. But, Transmission #1 did 300 miles the first pass then 1000 miles, so....
I don't really have any sort of real resolution yet. I wanna say this conclusively proves a crap seal from the SKF part, but I really can't. It's just as possible that the real difference here is that the Timken seal is "tougher" and putting up with a physical problem that the SKF seal couldn't. No idea... I do wanna believe the cause is the seal and not an external physical issue!
The only answer will come with time, so we're all on standby. :)
