Fake Postal Money Orders are unfortunately common - and some look so good they can initially fool even a postal counter worker. I know someone who recieved one, the bank took it (initially) as real... and then when the bank went to process the deposit - the %$#@ hit the fan.
Whether this was a concern in your case is hard to tell. How did the seller expect you to write them a money order (or check) without their name?
My most recent Saab purchase was several states away. I paid with a bank cashier's check. To remove the fake cashier's check concern - we (the seller & myself) drove to a location of my bank in his city - and the bank made the check right in front of us both. This removed his concern, and I prefer paying by cashiers check rather than a pile of cash - as it clearly shows payment was made.
