Wouldn't repair costs on either transmission be about the half the value of the car?
Have you test driven it yet? Personally, I'd go out and "thrash" on it a bit and see how well it works. Pretend you're in a drag race, or passing, or stuck in traffic. Some automatics are brilliant and others you want to curse at constantly.
This spring the rental car place ran out and I got a free upgrade to the F150 Ecoboost for a week. After about 1,500 miles and trying all the different transmission settings, I wasn't exactly in love. But the truck as a whole was an absolute blast to drive so I think long term I could overlook it.
I picked up my Viggen from a dealer in LA about 16 years ago. Headed north out of the 405 on a Friday around 5PM was an unforgettable nightmare. But the next day I got new sticky tires and drove the canyon road from Bakersfield up to Lake Isabella and I've been grinning ever since.
SO, I think the more important decision is to get what you like! Good luck!
