Tranny oil. lets figure this one out.
Posted by Bryan C (more from Bryan C) on Wed, 18 Oct 2000 07:22:05

The first time I changed my tranny oil I used regular 10w30 as the manual and Haynes suggested. I have a 95 900setc. I am always looking for ways to improve the vehicle. I want to put in a really good tranny oil and I always get different information.

Saab changed the fluid to synthetic. Was anything changed in the transmission when this change was made? Were synchronizers changed, bearings, anything?

Saab has been using 10w30 in their transmission and not hypoid gear oil for some time. Even on the c900s, so well before my 95 900. SaabTech recommends Amsoil 20w50.

Another recommendation is Redline MTL. I remember reading posts on the classic bulliten board going both ways. Some good some really bad. But that was a different tranny.

Some posts suggest that Saab does not want us putting synthetic 'Motor OIL" in our tranny and some posts suggest not puttin in synthetic "Transmission Fluid" The Saab tranny of late do not have Hypoid gears and do not require the Hypoid oil. Whatever that means. I have read in my manual where it says not to use "synthetic oil" in the transmissions that did not come with it. I don't recall reading where it says specifically motor or transmission fluid.

Can we all beat this subject to death until some consensus comes about? Thanks.

I am going to change the tranny oil again, but I want to be sure about what I am putting in. Thanks for all the help.
