CD did a comparo a few months back between an AWD A6 and a MB E-class (I think) and maybe one more FWD car.
The tests basically concluded that an AWD car has better acceleration, but the FWD or RWD (RWD WITH TRACTION CONTROL) cars had better breaking and cornering (due to less weight). I don't recall the exact text of the article, but that was the general idea.
I actually have the magazine at home, maybe I will scan it and put it up on my page if there is interest...
