Yes, I remember that article. I think it was an S-class, and the third car was a Pontiac, perhaps a Bonneville. IIRC, in most tests, they discovered that RWD w/TC was equal to FWD, but that AWD was better than FWD, even with TC.
I also ran across an older article in C&D, back in '81 or so, where they tested a 900 Turbo, Porsche 911, Suburban, AMC Eagle, and the Audi Quattro coupe turbo on snow. The 911 is far better than the Saab on accel and the hillclimb, but was much worse on handling and braking. I've thought about posting those results as well, but just haven't had the time. It was amusing reading where they talk about the "wide" tires that some of the cars had (195's and 205's)! My how far we've come.
