I have a 92 9000s that my wife drives and the same thing happened to me this past summer. The smell was first, burning plastic/rubber, that was the idler frying and the belt slipping. Then the check engine light came on, alternator not getting spun up. Then a whole lot of other ugly noises/smells/lights etc... It was a simple job that I elected not to do but only a new belt and idler pully was needed.
