I assume that this was a wear and noise issue, not a total failure which would have been very destructive. We have had a small number of reports of problems like this with the 2.3 and the turbo engines as well. The sprocket teeth wear, changing their profile, which causes wear.
The chain will have been wearing too. The only thing that I can see as the cause would be one of two things. The lubrication was inadequate. If you know that the engine had proper oil change intervals, then I would suspect a materials problem. Do you have the old parts? Are all sprocket that were removed, showing the same degree of wear. If not, then I would take them to a lab or shop and have the hardness of the steel checked. Then go after Saab to see what the harness spec's are for these items. If there is a hardness issue, the cause could be the steel used not being to spec, or the heat treatment was not to spec.
If the lubrication and materials are ok, then there is no reason for this to occur.
