I've got Mjollnir, the modified Saab scheduled to go in Beacon motors for the thermostat on Monday.
Regards the chech engine light, turn your key off. Turn the key to the ON position, but don't start the engine. Watch the Check Engine light. It'll go out and then attempt to communicate with you. In my case, it flashed 1 long and then 4 short - which indicates a temperature sensor problem. Because the car takes so long to heat up (at least 5 kilometres) and the rad hose starts to feel warm quickly, I'm assuming that the thermostat is stuck open and the ECU is getting confused at a mix of normal sensor measurements and a low temperature reading. Its only method of communication is a simple semaphore arrangement, a very limited vocabulary.
I'll let you know what happens with a new thermostat and the check engine light.
Hope this helps.
