I own a '94 900SET 120K miles. Everything I've read on this board makes me think (and I'm obviously in the minority on this one), that the '94 is not inherently more unreliable than the '95 or '96. Especially if you are buying at this point in its lifecycle - the early bugs are worked out. As any of these vintages age, they develop the same probs which need to be attended to.
There is one advantage to the '94's which needs to be considered if you want a driver's car. The '94's are more responsive (steering, braking, throttle) and unrefined (a positive in my book). I don't care for the "refinement" that was worked into the 900SE, esp. '96+. I invite any enthusiastic drivers to test drive a bunch of used SE's at a dealer and try this for yourself.
The price you mentioned seems a bit high, by the way.
All this being said, I wouldn't even consider buying the '94 900SE unless you have a mechanic you can trust that knows Saabs. (and if anyone in the Albany NY area knows one, please drop me a line - and don't even think of mentioning NSS)
