A real tune-up will probably help things out. Dean has repeatedly posted a great list of service items on this board, I'll attempt to hit the high points:
- Chevron Techron injector cleaner does a good job
- Cleaning the throttle body helps as it gets very dirty
- New plugs (NGK resistors ONLY for a turbo, I didn't see if you had a V6 or a 2.0)
- Check all vacuum lines and replace any that are even remotely dodgy
- Flush/fill all fluids
- You already did the fuel filter, but also the air filter might need changing
Aside from the fluids, everything else is easy.
I once had low MPG when the exhaust was full of holes, but that was a very obvious problem.

PS - I nearly dropped dead when Zumbach presented the bill for my front struts. But they were very knowledgable and professional, rotated the tires and changed the oil for no charge. Perhaps they took pity on my poor struts.
