It sounds like the idler wheel's dearing went dry, and overheated, and melted the pully. As is does this, the pully drag can be very high, and the belt is often destroyed. There are variations on what failf first. We get report of this happening once or twice a week. Cold weather seems to have increased this failure rate. And the fleet of NG's is getting older, and they get artheritis (sp?), just like their aging owners.
My 95SET's idler wheels lasted well past 100000 miles, but they felt dry, as I thought that they spun too freely. I replace them both. Upon pulling the seals, I could not see any traces of grease left in them. Any ball bearing that has a stationary inner race that runs at very high RPM's will tend to throw out all of its grease over time. It is a design issue for the most part. But simple alternative do not exist.
At around $35 each, the upper idler is very easy to change. So replacing before failure makes sense. The belt is not so easy to change. The upper idler wheel could be replaced with every other belt replacement for less than 5 minutes of labor while the belt is being replaced. Beats a tow truck any day. Keeo an old servicable belt and old pully in a poly bag, with the spare tire, as a tasiman agaist the evil pully failure gods.
Any wierd noises before the failure?
You can put a 1/2x1/2 bar or tube into the tensioner, and lock it in place with a larger nail or screw driver. You can then feel how the bearings are doing. This can take just a few minutes. If the upper pully is bad, you can replace in 5 minutes or less.
