plastic y joint thing (again)

That gray plastic y joint that juts out from the back left side of the valve cover is partially broken on my 94 900SET. As I mentionaed before I think the mechanic f-ed it up when changing valve cover gaskets. Well, the little line of the two parts of it was broken and left hanging. I rigged it with electrical tape, which failed and leaked some oil. I cleaned it off and used duct tape which seems to do the trick. What is this joint for exactly and why would it have oil? Can I get by with a good seal provided by the duct tape? Thanks.
