In the trannies of the old Saab 93's, 95's and 96's, there was a sort of centrifugal clutch on the input shaft. When the engine rpm's decreased to less than what was needed to power the trans, the trans would disengage from the engine. In other words, it would more or less go to neutral. I think originally this was done to decrease emissions in the 2 cycle oil-burner engines, however, the true benefit was that if you skidded on ice, and let your foot off the gas, all power (unequal forces)would be immediately removed from the drive wheels, allowing you to steer the car out of the skid. It worked great if you could keep your wits about you enough to stay off the brakes and just concentrate on steering. Basicly, the car would want to right its course and go straight. If you have an NG 5 speed, you can effect the same phenomenon by punching the clutch in during a skid.
