I expect that the ignition is not up to the job. The first suspect would be the plugs, which burn off after a highway run. Roughness is probably missing, and the O2 and ECU are telling you that they cannot maintain O2 levels in the exhaust.
Are you running the Saab specified resistor plugs? Gapped?
Another issue that might be contributing to the probems would be dirty injectors which can cause uneven fueling and inadequate spray patterns. Try a bottle of techron concentrate.
Next, I would check the rotor, distributor cap and wires. Make sure that they are clean & dry. When the engine is not idling properly, look at the ignitiion components in a dark garage at night, with the door open. Let you eyes get accustomed to the dark and look for high voltage leaks. You will want the cover over the plugs removed to do this.
Has the fuel filter ever been changed?
What do the plugs look like. Dark? Inspect looking for cracks in the insulation, and tracking where the spark has tracted over the surface of the insulator.
The fact that things work well sometimes makes me feel that the fuel filter, pump and pressure are probably not at fault.
Ask your dealer if your motronic ECU is subject to a recall. IE recall 294 for version 2.10.3. Have your VIN handy, but the dealer should have your VIN.
