Brake switch is under the dash - it is an in/out switch that contacts with the arm of the brake pedal. "In" is off as arm pushes on switch, "out" is on as you push brake pedal and arm away from switch. Two switches in that vicinity, I think, one for brakes other for cruise control. I believe you can adjust the switch so it makes good contact with the pedal arm - by your description, the switch is not making contact or it's kaput.
