Y'know, the TPS keeps coming up in these trouble-shooting discussions.
It's been suggested that a vacuum leak might be causing some of these problems, and while it's a possibility, the character of the behavior makes me suspect that something else is the cause. I would expect a leak to cause a consistent behavior, certainly over a time span of say, a minute, but the surge (obviously) and idle behavior that I see sometimes vary over that time span.
As I was driving home yesterday, the high idle condition occured, ie, no engine braking after throttle lift, I put the clutch in just to see where it was idleing, and it was at about 1500rpm. As I watched the tach, the rpms suddenly dropped from ~1500 to ~1100 (normal). I engaged the clutch and turned onto my street, noticing the "high idle" come back as I was driving down the street. Pulling in to my driveway, the idle was back to ~1500. As I sat there with the clutch in, the idle dropped to normal for about 10 seconds, then sped back up to 1500. I got out to go open the garage door and the idle dropped to normal and stayed there as I pulled the car in and sat for a minute before shutting it off.
Dean and others have suggested inspecting the throttle for sticking; I would expect the dealer did this when they cleaned it early in this game. That's still a possibility, though. Blipping the throttle doesn't seem to have any effect on this condition, either in instigating it, or eliminating it. I'm compiling a list of things to check when I have a free moment.
thanks, Mike
