I don't this is a wild goose chase. My intent was to provide what might prove to be an additional data point. My hope was that someone would say "yes, my car had this and it went away with x and y repairs".
I have not had time to work on the vacuum lines; with a little luck I'll have an hour or two free this coming weekend. With all due respect, though, don't think a vacuum leak is the culprit, at least not the sole one. Sometimes this condition lasts for the entire 10 minutes it takes to drive to/from work, other times it'll come and go within the space of 30 seconds. My experience with vacuum leaks, while admittedly on less-sophisticated cars, is that they cause a continual problem. As I'd mentioned previously, the dealer spent between half an hour and an hour replacing vacuum lines on an earlier service visit last summer, but to no avail. I don't know which ones were replaced and which ones he left.
The only thing that seems to make this problem go away is an appointment with the service department. It doesn't act up from the day I make the appointment until hours after I get it back.
thanks,
Mike
