Well, the visit to the dealer turned out better than expected. The LF clunk wasn't the strut mount, but instead turned out to be a loose bolt on the strut housing. (New struts 6 months ago) The difference in the steering and ride is amazing; I'd noticed some degradation in the last few months, but had just assumed it was the car wearing out.
The car did the usual surge/upshift light thing on the way to the dealer, but settled down as soon as the place was in sight. Sigh. I had them go over a list of sensors (thanks TG) and check the vacuum lines again. The mechanic didn't find any bad lines at all, but did replace one hose (crankcase breather?) that was oil-soaked. He also checked the TPS and MAP sensors and declared them fine. No codes stored. No sign of exhaust leaks, either. Naturally it didn't act up at all while they had the car, but went back to the old behavior on most of the drive home.
The service manager was very sympathetic and related that there was a recent recall on Trionic T7's that was due to corrosion on contacts in the ECU caused by outgassing from one of the glues used in mfr. His point was that my problem could be caused by almost anything.... He agreed that they need to be able to read the ECU & sensors while the car is acting up. Hopefully we can do that.
I appreciate the help so far and welcome any thoughts and ideas that might strike you all.
