I run 25 to 30 k miles a year highway driving and change the oil every 7 to 10k whether it needs it or not with "whatever's on sale" (including store brand) dino 10w30 and cheapo filter. After 191 k miles, still no engine/turbo/performance/oil-burning problems. I consider this not only a testimony to better machining in new engines, but also to incredible viscosity performance of even the cheapest SAE rated dino oils (face it, the technology and chemistry is available to everyone, and at this point, it's cheap). The thing is-- consider the number of hours (rpm's) that your engine runs, not the number of miles. If you do a lot of urban stop/go driving, the number of rev's per hour might be a heck of a lot greater than what I would do on my high speed commute-- 120 miles daily. So, adjust accordingly. In other words, if you engine has idled in stop and go traffic to go 20 miles in an hour, it might have about the same or a bit more wear as mine that screams along for the same hour traveling 60 miles.
You're gonna get a lot of recommendations on this board to switch to synthetics, but unless you're red-lining, IMHO, they're a waste of money and resources. I'm basing my opinions only on experience--- like I said-- 191 k on the saab, (and 243k miles on a bronco, with no breakdowns, oil burning, or rebuilds). Just my opinion.
